Happy Mother’s Day

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I’m reminded that my path to motherhood wasn’t typical. After struggling with infertility, Orion and I decided to build our family through adoption. On November 12, 2015, I answered a life changing phone call. A woman in Arizona asked us to be her baby’s parents. A week later we watched our son come into the world. We fell in love instantly. I’ll forever be grateful for the gift of adoption. Being Graham’s momma is the most important, joyful, fulfilling thing I’ve ever done.

There were many months when I thought I wouldn’t get to be a mother. I won’t pretend every minute with a threenager is roses and sunshine, but because I know how fortunate I am to have the experience of motherhood, I try to remind myself to be thankful, especially on Mother’s Day.

There are parts I won’t miss about the age Graham is at (tantrums, oh so many tantrums), but the part I will miss is how affectionate he is right now. I know there will be a time when he doesn’t want to be so physically close to me, when he doesn’t want to climb all over my body or snuggle in close when he sneaks into my bed every morning. I know he won’t always ask for 40 hugs and 40 smooches before saying “bye momma” when I drop him off at preschool. He won’t always hug me so fiercely or turn a kiss on my cheek into a puppy-style lick on the face. So for now, while he’s little and he wants to be wrapped up in my warm embrace, I’ve got 40 smooches for him anytime he wants them. And, when he’s big and he doesn’t think it’s cool to snuggle with his momma, I’ve got these pictures to look back on and remember my cuddly little one.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of my clients who have brought their little ones into my studio or out to my field. I’ve loved documenting your motherhood story. Getting to snuggle your babies, play with your toddlers and joke with your big kids is the best perk of this job. If you’re currently experiencing a sad Mother’s Day like I did in 2013, 2014 and 2015, I know there is nothing I can say or do to make it better for you. I wish I could wash away your pain, but all I can do is send you love until you’re on the other side of this hard season.
